The auto-transformers are frequently used like an economic alternative to the distribution transformers. It allows the adjustment of the output voltage for specific charges like the heating or drive forces for industrial machines. The primary and the secondary of an auto-transformer are on same winding, instead of being on two separate windings like an isolation transformer. However this alternative cannot be employed on certain feeding systems: when the neutral on the secondary must be used or grounded and when the neutral of the primary winding is not available.
